Recap: 5 Year Anniversary | Blue Wave

Headed into the Blue Wave (343 Congress St, Harbor side) around 10:30 p.m. y'all know how I don't do lines - and was pleased to find that the cover charge had remained at $20. I of course headed straight for the bar and asked for a STRONG but good drink. I tried to order the Nirvana, but my bartender Amanda let me know that it wasn't very good, and tried to twist it up with another type of vodka and let me try it. Yuck! I then asked for my staple - hey I tried to be different, but sometimes you just gotta stick with you know. They didn't charge me for the first drink, thanks guys! It was only $8 which is one of the cheapest strongest drinks I've rec'd.

Your girl BostonFab!

Flying solo I kept myself perched at the bar to do some people watching. Rob of R.O.B. - I still can't get over that - came and chit-chatted with me for a bit which is a rare (okay has never happened) occurrence. He's actually a pretty nice guy :) (All I want is one gene from your family - just one!!!) - Anyways he has a party concept that I think is going to be great! But...since I know promoters read this - I won't blow up his spot. As soon as it gets off the ground I will def. let y'all know. Don't forget where you (kinda) heard it first!

BostonFab! and promoter Rob of R.O.B.

Although they were celebrating the 5 Year Anniversary of Soulful Saturdays, this was actually my first time to the Blue Wave on a Saturday. The crowd was slightly international, and more of the seasoned and sophisticated crowd. I would say the age range averaged around late 20's to early 30's. DJ Che Boogie stared us off with the old skool R&B which got everyone into a chill and relaxed vibe.

I'm tellin' ya ladies - if you decide to go solo sit at the bar and be genuinely friendly and you'll meet lots of cool people. I even met the infamous Larry of Trillium Salon (49 Gloucester St, Boston) who actually does do great work. Check out the hair of the Asian bartender with the crop cut...nice...

Finally people started kinda dancing around 12 a.m. Though most were content to circulate the room, by chatting with one another rather than dancing. It seemed like the majority of people there were regulars and knew each other.

The crowd socializing

Camp Lo got on the mike around 1 a.m. and did his hit "Luchini" (AKA: This is it) and that was it. His set was madd short! And I didn't hear a formal announcement. It could of happened while I was in the restroom or something...but still one song? After his performance DJ Massive got on the tables and hit us with a bit more upbeat music, but still grown. None of that Soulja Boy and Lil' Bow Wow for this crowd.

Camp Lo

Towards the end of the night I decided to mingle a bit more and met Betty a Fab! Fan - (Thanks for reading!!) and a family member of partial owner - I'll call him Mr. Incognito. - who she introduced me to. Thanks for taking the time for a photo op.

BostonFab! and Mr. Incognito

BostonFab! and a Fab! Fan!

This was a cool night to see new faces and meet new people I give it a solid B.

Recap: 3 Year Anniversary | Mojitos

I hadn't planned on going out on Friday, but you know me- always on the job :) My Fab! Roomie Claudia invited me out to Mojitos (48 Winter St, Downtown Crossing) by saying the magic word - FREE. Her Fab! Friend Stephanie had rec'd an e-mail for free entry and free drinks. Little did I know that this was actually the 3 year anniversary party of the Latin club and my first time to the spot.

Upon entry there was this crazy pungent smell like sewage mixed with body odor. Downtown Crossing always has that kind of funky smell, but this was really nasty. The upstairs wasn't open yet so we headed downstairs to get our free drinks. They were all tropical, I had a Passion one that was actually pretty good and then I had their version of an apple martini - that had absolutely no alcohol in it. You probably would have had to drink 10 of either of those drinks to get a buzz, but I can't be ungrateful. I did end up getting another drink, a grey goose and tonic for $10 which was equally watered down *ah well at least I wasn't thirsty. :) ...

At the bar waiting for the free drinks

Downstairs they were playing bachata and reggaton, and my fab! friends had a good time trying out their steps. I surveyed the room for hotties and found a few. I love how salsa brings so many different cultures together there were Black, White, Asian, Latino and everything else in between. One love y'all one love.

Fab! Friends practicing their skills

Upstairs the crowd was smaller than, I think they felt a hit from the holiday weekend 'cuz I've hear this place usually gets packed fast. The temperature was very cool, which I was annoyed about at first but by the my 3rd "paso doble" I was grateful. Shout out to my dance partner Haan - good lookin' out.

Fab! Friend Stephanie, Fab! Roomie Claudia, BostonFab!, BostonFab! Fan David

The DJ was good, but stuck with classic songs by Elvis Crespo, DMG, and Mark Anthony, which since it had been a while since my salsera days I was grateful, the rest of the crowd wasn't all that into it, though it really depended on the song. The crowd also was a little funny. Usually at a salsa club unless a man is ultra creepy you dance with him, but gals were turning down guys left and right. I would have danced more, but I got a little wore out - need to do more cardio at the gym. I did get to meet Herby of Poetic Escape - it was his first time there too!

My thoughts on Mojitos, if you are curious about salsa dancing and want to give it a try I think Mojitos is a great place for beginners. There are a lot of friendly people who are willing to help you out and teach you the basics and it's pretty economical :)

Fab! Friend Stephanie getting her first lessons

I give it a solid B. But they really gotta work on the septic tank issues - talk about ew!

Recap: Net Party | Estate

Last night I tried to act like Ciara and "Dare to be different" by heading out to the NetParty.com sponsored "Networking Event with a Twist". I found parking pretty easily and headed to Estate (1 Boylston Place, in the Alley). I had been eager to try this place out for a while- When I arrived there was a line...the guy checking ID's was a bit annoyed. (You are working - be pleasant )

When I got inside there were different name tag colors for your industry - Pink for Entertainment, Light Blue for Healthcare...etc. Nice concept, but what would have been nicer is if they already had the name tags made instead of having girls write your names on them Sharpies . And sorry to say, most of the girls weren't too bright. When my gal pal was trying to describe that she was a Development Officer at a University she was like - "yah, but what do you do?" *Sigh....

BostonFab! and Fab! Friends, Jax, Rebecca and Michelle

Once inside I was ready to dig into the free hors d' oeuvres that they had advertised would be served from 6 - 7 p.m. None to be found. Okay so I maybe there were like 2 trays of chicken skewers being passed around - but there were over 500 people who RSVP'd and I was not thinking this would be a "loaves and fishes" moment. *Ugh.

Networkers hungry to chat it up or just hungry

Then let's talk a lil' bit about the venue...dank and hot! People kept congregating to the side so that they could actually see! There were only two chandeliers on either side of the room with a few back lights in the bar area. So, trying to find out what people did even with the colored name tags was not so helpful. And the acoustics...also awful. On weekends this is a night club, so I am not sure how that works out. I felt like I was shouting to the person next to me.

BostonFab! and Steve a Compliance Specialist

Still determined to get something out of this event I headed to the bar to get a glass of wine and was met with the rudest bartender I have experienced in Boston thus far. First we asked the chick - and if you ever go there she has long blonde hair and was at the bar on the far wall next to the VIP area- I really got to get peoples names...anyways...so we first go up and my Fab! friend Jax asks if they have a drink menu - She laugh -" Uh- no" Jax:..."Ooookay so what about a mojito" - "Oh no - we don't have any mint". So while Jax was thinking about her 3rd attempt I asked if I could get a Cabernet "Will that be one or two?" Me: "One"...so then Jax orders a Piniot Grigio - and she gave her attitude about that....then she screws the top off of something and gives it to me. "$8" Okay so I give her a $20 and then she gives me back $4 and I'm like - "I just said I was getting one drink" - She was like "Oh...well I'll give her change and you can just get it from her." SO RUDE!!....I'm almost over it.

After that I tried to mingle a bit, but the group was such a hodgepodge of people and I couldn't see who was my in my color group, so I felt at a loss. I mean yes, we were there to network, but in a sweltering low lit environment, where I had to shout to be heard, it was kinda hard.

Realtor Kobie Evans and BostonFab!

Packed like sardines!

But oh my dear friends I have not come to the "twist" part of this "networking with a twist" so at exactly 8 o'clock all of the sudden the lights went even lower -though I didn't think it was possible - the music turned up and suddenly there were pink search lights swirling around the dance floor. Uh-oh....yes, this networking event had turned into a singles bar...just that quickly. And your girl had to get!

Impression of the Grand Opening of the Boston NetParty - if you have NOTHING better to do on a night that they have their events and you enjoy quirky people watching, or you typically use "So, what do you do" as a pick-up line - then this is the place for you. Other than that - skip it!

Recap: Royale at Umbria

After getting a lil' lost (okay very lost) trying to pick up BostonFab! Correspondent Chanelle - never did make it and she drove in on her own - sorry girlfriend -next time I promise! I finally found parking and boy was I runnin' down the street in my 4 inchers!! I got into the club around 11:15 p.m. - whew!! I was so scared I was going to miss the deadline!

When I got inside we headed to the check in table and the girl at the door -not someone I recognized - already looked overwhelmed. For the first time I had forgotten to bring my pre-paid ticket receipt and was called out on it. Already agitated from my run down the street I looked at the girl like "is there gonna be a problem?" so I apologize sweetie, mama's feet were hurtin'! :) Fortunately Chanelle had hers so we slided in on that.

BostonFab! and BostonFab! Correspondent Chanelle

After that slight drama :) I found out there was no need to worry - wasn't hardly anybody in there. I was kinda taken aback - Did they stress the be there on time a bit too much- perhaps? Or have the long lines turned from a blessing to a curse?

The smaller crowd gave me the chance to take in the scenery as I love the ambiance of Umbria anyhow. I headed to the bar to get my drink on floor 4 and the bartenders were very friendly and nice. The one who make Fab! CFO Erika's drink even topped off her apple martini almost giving her a 2 for 1 - which was very important for a $12 drink - dag. As for me I got my typical vodka tonic, but when I got soda water instead of tonic water - amature mistake - she made sure she checked the fountain spigot, checked with the other bartender and happily made me another. Thanks.

Let's talk for a moment about the "other scenery"...the men. Although there were significantly less of them than the woman I didn't even care 'cuz there was some serious deliciousness going on...hats, suits, and some serious swagger, - I kept thinking - will the real K. Pritty please stand up? hee-hee j/k but seriously though...I had some serious heart palpitation issues. As for the women...ladies! How you gonna let the men out shine you?! I know it is the last days of summer and all and it maybe your last time to pull out the skin tight tube dress, but....ladies leave a lil' something to the imagination! Okay there were some of y'all were looking really nice for real tho, - there was this one grey chiffon layered dress I was really feelin'. Good look, hun.

Looking good...but slow to get on the dance floor. By 12:15 I was getting a little worried that the party wasn't going to jump off as the dance floor was still sparse. DJ Backspin was doin' his thing giving out shout outs (thanks!) and reminding us - yo - the dance floor is open...

The crowd finally getting into it

Finally people started workin' it. The cool temperature soon heated up as couples started grinding and pumpin' to the rhythm. Maybe y'all need to let a few drinks settle in before you can really let loose and get out there...

*Fab! Girl Tip: Be ware of the freaky wall. If you want to get freaky head towards the back mirrored wall...if you don't want to get freaky stay away!!...they will draw you in and assume that you want to be a part of the mayhem...stay away I say...stay away ;)

BostonFab! Correspondent Chanelle, Fab! CFO Erika

Backspin kept with a more Caribbean, Latin vibe which was cool that he was in support of Carnival that had happened earlier in the day. For me being a full blooded African American, I could of used a little bit more of my Hip Hop and R&B...but I guess I can get that any other night. And I learned some new songs with the Haitian music. Thanks for sharing your singing voice will us Backspin - you're a natural - lol.

I was a bit disappointed however in the transitions. There were several times when I completely stopped on the dance floor to catch the next beat. I dunno what was going on...all in all it was an okay set, but not the best that I've heard from him. I did like how the crowd got in on the action a lot and were screaming and singing their hearts out...unity is a good thing. Towards the end even K. Pritty and J.Francois were feeling that Zouk - private party!! lol...

The party came to an end around 2 a.m. but the security was very nice to let people mingle and slowly make their way out without the usual "TIME TO GO HOME!!" shouting. They even helped a sistah down the several flights of stairs - and just for the record it was THE SHOES not the DRINKS that made me wobbly. Thanks :)

BostonFab! Correspondent Chanelle, Fab! CFO Erika, BostonFab!

All in all it was a good time, had by all I give it a B+.

Mini Recap: The Un* Party at The Good Life

I made it out to The Good Life (28 Kingston St) for Alysia's Un* Party at around 12 a.m. The bouncers hardly checked our ID's as we entered the establishment and headed downstairs. As we were heading down my nose was hit with this powerful sceptic tank odor. I dunno what the issue was or what was "backed up" but it was n-a-s-t-y. Tryin' to ignore the smell and get to the party I met up with my fab! friends and by the looks on their faces they were none-too-happy with my Friday night selection.

Directly in front of them were two dudes and a gal battling one another in a circle. Now that's all fine and well when you are in an area that gives you enough space to do so...but uh- in case you didn't notice, The Good Life is a hot boxed basement. There's hardly enough room to turn around let alone have a battling contest?

The Young Ones trying to get it in...

So as the young ones continued their reign I tried to do my best to get into the groove. The DJ of The Bladerunners - was not a mixed tape - though I almost wish it would have been. Some his selections were...Nelly's "Country Grammar", New Kids on the Block "Hanging Tough", 50 Cent's "Up in the Club", need I say more??

And as far as the crowd they were quite young age ranging around 22. I was surprised any of them even knew the lyrics to the songs the DJ was playing, though I do think I saw a confused look or two. There wasn't a dress code so it was certainly a come-as-you-are party which for some was a welcoming atmosphere to wear you kicks or a tube top in jeans. But for the most part the host and people seemed to get into as best they could. As for me and my crew we called it a wrap a 1:30.

It was free so I can't really be mad since I got back exactly what I put in. This was a great concept, but I can't really say that it delivered. Sorry Alysia, gotta give this party a C.

Mini Recap: Friday Night at Saint

So another one bites the dust...one of my party friends Abra is setting her sites on New York after passing The Bar. Yaaaaaay Abra you will be missed!!!

She decided to have her soiree at Saint (90 Exeter Street, Near Prudential) a weekly party with no cover before 10 and after that it's $10 (if you call them to get on the list) or $20 if you don't.

Fab! Friend Abra, BostonFab! Correspondent Chanelle, BostonFab!

Gladly we showed up at 10:30 there wasn't a line and the place wasn't packed. I like the fact that there are 3 different settings. There's the white bar, the red bar, and the black/blue bar. We first started out in the red room where there was a relaxed vibe, with a female DJ spinning smooth R&B hits while we sat on comfy black couches amidst the velvet colored walls. A Grey Goose and cranberry set Fab! Correspondent Chanelle, back only $9 and it was well made.

For a more upbeat vibe we headed to the black/blue room where the international crowd (almost every nation was represented) and although amicable some people needed to keep their hands to themselves - uh- yeah but mostly people stuck with their own group. The DJ was pretty good and kept us groovin' to the latest in top 40, kept it simple, didn't do anything fancy by playing mostly top 40 w/ a few dips back to the old skool - he played the songs long enough for you to get into it then moved on to the next using transitions that didn't interrupt the flow.

The international crowd

We only stayed 'til around 12 by then the party was in full swing although not overcrowded and as we left they were already holding a very long line.

I would recommend Saint if you like to lounge and get your groove on with typical beats, but not so typical people, but suggest you arrive before the price goes up 'cuz I think a $20 cover is ridiculous for a weekly party.

I give it a B.
