Recap | Slade's Chicken n' Waffles w/ Delta Sigma Theta

Thursday The Boston Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. hosted a professional mixer at Slade’s called Chicken n' Waffles.

After searching half an hour for a parking space – (the “plenty of parking” the Delta's stated on the invitation couldn't be more from the truth!) When I entered the venue I was greeted with familiar faces, the smell of hot grease, and the melodic crooning of a live jazz band…I had to check myself to make sure I was still in Boston.

The place was packed but in a good way. Though the food was reasonable (my waffle without chicken [I'm a vegetarian!!] was only $2) the food line was serious! People got frustrated waiting sometimes over 15 minutes; people even ran back to the kitchen to get their own food…wow. When you hungry, you hungry….I heard the chicken was slammin’ and several people left with to-go boxes.

If you go to Slade’s expecting an upscale joint, you will be disappointed. The décor is minimal and food is served on styrofoam plates with plastic silverware. If they are as busy as they were on Thursday night - you will end up busing your own table. My Merlot was served in a champagne glass and the rest of the drinks were served in plastic cups. But one good thing about Slade's is that they do not skimp on the liquor. A vodka tonic will set you back only about $5 and it is's 3/4ths vodka.

Although the event was sponsored by The Boston Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, I was hard pressed to find any... although the event brought out quite an array of business professionals. This was definitely a good place to exchange business cards and make new connections.

I would recommend this spot for the "after work/ non-pretentious" types who can loosen their tie, suck on a chicken bone and throw back a strong drink while listening to some local jazz. If you aren’t into that scene, you still may want to stop by for a plate to-go when you get a cravin' for some good soul food.

Stay fab :) !

Recap: The Merger | Harvard Law Black Student Asoc. with AASU

Yes, you’re girl was on it- snow storm and all! (I am dedicated to the cause). I had a feeling that it was going to memorable…plus was not about to lose out on my pre-paid ticket.

We arrived early and headed for the nearest one of the 8 ( yes, I said 8) bars. The ballroom at the Marriott Cambrige was spacious, but they did a good job of encouraging people to mingle by strategically placing tall tables near the dance floor without chairs.

Though the bar was open they by no means skimped on the liquor. The apple martini my girl ordered almost knocked her out!

By 11:30 my intution proved to be right! This part was jumpin’! The atmosphere was consistently friendly. Whether you were dressed in jeans or shimmering sequins you were greeted warmly with a handshake, a nod, or if appropriate – booty tap – eh I ain’t mad atcha! We really showed out y’all - dancing the “soulja boy”, the “cha-cha slide”, “the electric slide” and even “stepped in the name of love”.

As the party ended I got the feeling that what I had experienced was not only a great party, but a celebration of who we are and in anticipation what our future lawyers, doctors, entrepreneurs and educators will become.
Thank you Harvard Law Black Student Association and Harvard Business School African American Student Union for a celebration of "us". And if y’all ivy's continue to work as hard as you “play” - you definitely are a force to be reckoned with. Can’t wait ‘til the next one!

As always - keep it fab!

Recap: J. Francois hosts District Lounge

On Thursday I headed out with Erika, a BostonFab! correspondent to District Lounge in the hopes of a chill good time and thankfully, I was not dissapointed. Though most of the patrons were in the order of the Blue and White, fortunately they took kindly to us outsiders and were quite hospitable.

(Photo: Old skool Sigmas along with me and Erika, a Fab! girl correspondent)

The atmosphere was friendly and open. I shared several lengthy conversations including one with the host himself J. Francois, which is a rarity at other events. (He is so gracious and kind!) Ooooh and ladies - the man smells as good as he looks!

(Sorry if I ruined your bad boy image J...)

(Photo: The Fab! chicks with J. Francois)

Though, I probably should have brought my business cards, rather than my "two-step", I still had a good time actually getting to know people rather than thinking "I know this chick didn't just step on my manolos?!"

Stay fab! :)

President's Weekend Re-Cap

Sunday night me and my girls arrived at the ultra hip District for the free Appreication Party hosted by A1 Entertainment, with J. Francois and K. Pritty and it was ACTUALLY FREE...woah - as you know this feat is not attempted by many.

We showed up early to avoid the crowds but ended up having nothing to worry about 'cuz there wasn't one - but once we got inside we were captivated by the gorgeous venue with it's birch covered wall and glam decor check out the picture below. The crowd must have been watching the last minutes of the of the All Star game (Go Eastsssidddee!) because after 12 the place got packed!
I don't remember there being a D.J, so whoevever supplied the I-Pod had put in the right tunes to keep the crowd movin'.

(It was free entry y'all they had to "scrimp" on the expendables).

Or... could it that we all spent our entry money at the bar and didn't notice?? Either way it was a good time had by all and I finally got to get loose and sincerely felt appreciated.

Check back for this weekends picks as Harvard does it big for Black History Month....

Keep it right, Keep it fab baby!

President's Weekend Re-Cap

So you're girl was all about the promoters J. Francois and K. Pritty this weekend. Saturday night I was at Z-Square and surprisingly the crowd was sparse - I had pull a "phone a friend" to make sure it wasn't just me. It was after 11:30 so I ended up paying the $20 coverand then was forced to - I mean - listened to up and coming artist Erin Daneelle - now the girl has pretty decent pipes, but I don't think the crowd was feeling the jazzy vibe. Maybe this kind of atmosphere would be better suited for an after-work night not a 3-day-I-ain't-gotta-work-so-I'm about-to-get-loose-weekend.

Her set ended around 12 and then D.J. Eight-2 hit the turntables with the Jamaican flava that lasted all night long - but not in a good way. Maybe this was the usual for the international crowd, but I woudl have prefered more of the mix. As for the crowd - the ladies ran the floor as corny dudes stood on the sidelines gawking like they were scurred or somethin'.

There were some freebies; Pama Liquor passed around free samples and T-shirts (very cute) and at the end of the night you were handed free copies of Erin Daneelle's 5 Song CD. (Errr-body know that girls name is Erin Danielle, not Danieele, but it's alright boo, get creative on us).

All in all it was it was a decent night, but definetly not one for the record books.

Pre-President's Day Party Picks

Don’t worry about not having a Valentine on Thursday; V-Day was but one day, but President’s Day is gonna be one long crazy weekend!

Rest up on Friday to get ready for the parties on Saturday and Sunday… if you gotta work on Monday pretend like you don’t, ‘cuz everybody and they mamma gonna be out and you won’t wanna miss out!

Saturday's pick is J. Francois and K. Pritty's "Saturday Night Live" at Z-Square (14 JFK Street, Harvard Square Cambridge). There will be a live performance by Erin Daneele and Band. Also, Pama Liqueur (it has pomegranate in it...just letting you know in case you have an allergy lol) is the drink of choice for the night.

I advise you to arrive early because their lines have been so serious lately – like around the block – so if you're the fashionably late kind, you might just be fashionable all by your self. Y’all know it’s too cold in Boston to be messin’ with those lines now…

Pre-President Day Party at District

Sunday night I am finally headin' out to the gorgeous lounge of District (180 Lincoln Street, Downtown) – for the "Appreciation Party: hosted by J. Francois and K. Pritty it's FREE!...well…if you are on the guest list, that is. Click here to get the hook up!!
Don’t it seem like J. Francois never loosens his tie ??...Don’t get me wrong, I love a man in a suit, but dang! I wonder if he ever wants to get loose sometimes (whatevs)?

*Note: the guest list WILL shut down so you will want to arrive early if you're headed to this spot. Also, keep it classy ladies and gents to avoid problems at the door.

President's Day Weekend | Mistrie and Klutch Present Blazers and Stillettos

In hot competition with the J.Francois event, Mistrie and Klutch are throwing "Blazers and Stilletos" (they are really wearing those stilettos, dang! I’m gonna have to get some new tips), which will be held at Club Venu ( 100 Warrenton Street, Downtown).

DJ Geespin and DJ Backspin (what's up with the rhyming? They family or sumptin?) will be hypin' us up. Of course you better be sportin’ stilettos and blazers…hence the theme y’all, as they are REQUIRED. (boo on that)

For the Classy Valentine

If you're like me and without a Valentine you may feel that this day is not for you. On the contrary! There are several events this Thursday that cater to the sexy single scene as well as all those cutesy couples.
For the single, sexy and oh-so-classy; Jet Set Productions is hosting The Heartbreaks Ball at the ultra swanky Whiskey Park (64 Arlington Street) on Valentine's Day.

With smooth jazz by the Japanese Swing Cats and hot tunes from D.J. Sensae they're also serving hors d’ oeuvres at the cocktail hour.

And even if your man skimps on the flowers this Vtine day; they're giving out free roses for the first 100 ladies. Ooh la la!!

Doors open at 8 p.m. To buy tickets in advance, and for more information, click here.

Valentine's Day Picks Continued...

J. Francois once again pampers you with The Chocolate Love Party II at
Z-Square (14 JFK Street, Harvard Square, Cambridge).

If this party is anything like The Godiva Chocolate Party then you are in for a treat, literally. The invite boats two chocolate fountains (as if one wasn’t enough...can't you give someone a cavity or something???) with a variety of fruits and snacks served until 1 a.m.

It's $15 w/ RSVP or $20 for couples…I’m sayin’ tho’ why you ALWAYS gotta charge the single people more? I get it - Valentine's Day is for couples...Boo, go on and find you somebody in line, even if it's just for the discount. To RSVP click here!!!

Who knows? You may just find love...stranger things have happened.

DJ Eight 2 at Lovers & Friends | Blue Wave

Downtime Online, E1 Live! and R.O.B. presents Lovers and Friends featuring live music by SOL MELODIQ (from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.) and then the hardest working DJ in the business DJ Eight 2 (from 10 p.m. - 2 a.m.) at the newly remodeled Blue Wave (343 Congress St., Downtown). General admission is $10.

If you want to get your grub on before you get your party on; call 617.790.0720 for reservation. Ask for their Valentine's dinner specials.

So whether you're spending this Valentine’s Day solo or joined at the hip, remember to love and appreciate yourself. It's the only way to get anything and everything fabulous.

Keep it right - keep it fab baby!

DJ Khaled's in the Building!!! Well...maybe.

Saturday E1 Live! Entertainment (and a bunch of other promoters) will try to beef up their crowd base by hittin' you with spin master D.J. Khaled at 360 Ultra Lounge (33 Batterymarch St., Financial District) AND at Club Passion (6 Portland St, Providence RI). Club Passion will also feature Mims and Shaggy (Really??) .

I'm saying tho' on the SAME NIGHT??? What?? *Note the "Sounds provided by"*which probably means either somebody's got a CD made by Khaled or somebody ain't gonna make their money that night - bet.

They are TRYING for an more upscale crowd by requesting no hoodies or Tims, but that remains to be seen. If you're trying to decide between the two venues - head to Passions, at least you'll get some kinda half-way decent person if Khaled decides not to show.

Keep it right...keep it fab baby!

Get Off the Wall!

I think the drab weather has affected the mood of the party-goers this weekend. But if you are brave enough to face the winter blues head on check out Off the Wall Friday's at Z Square (14 JFK St. Cambridge). This day time eatery has become the jump off and Friday night is no exception. Edgar of So Good Entertainment has worked to make this weekly party THE SPOT by making it FREE - yup NO COVER. Unheard of in Harvard Square - so bet you will want to check it out. Hey, if it's a bad time at least you didn't shell out 20 bones, ya' heard?

Giants beat Boston (Are you FRIGGIN' kidding me?!)

So your girl is still mourning the Patriots loss to the Giants. Dang man! But I gotta report on the best Superbown Party I've ever been to, thrown by many hosts of the The Boston Black Professionals Meetup Group and Downtimeonline.net in the Deville Lounge at Kings Billards (50 Dalton Street, Back Bay).

The lounge holds about 200+ seats with flat screen TVs at every angle...and by 5:30 the place was packed!! Fortunately one of the organizers was kind enough to recognize my lost puppy look and got me (and my CP time friends) a seat - THANK YOU GIRL!

Although my team ultimately lost, I am glad to have spent game time screaming (I still am a little hoarse), laughing and eventually crying with this up beat, friendly crowd. The management was VERY accomodating (y'all know how we can be) and did their best to keep up with the multiple orders of apps and drinks.

If you want an at home feelin' atmosphere without moms asking you to clean-up you should check out Kings during the play-offs.

Stay tuned for this weekend's party pics....
