Recap: Boston Fashion Week: “Shoe Diva”- An Evening of Footwear and Fashion | Hello Stiletto | Macy's

Fabulously submitted by BostonFab! Correspondent Chanelle

Admit it…every woman has a fashion addiction and for many, the drug of choice is SHOES! On Wednesday, September 17th, at 6:00 p.m., I found confirmation for this theory when I joined numerous fellow shoe addicts at “Shoe Diva” – An Evening of Footwear and Fashion, hosted by Hello Stiletto* and Macy’s, at Macy’s Downtown Crossing (450 Washington Street, Downtown). Accompanied by Fab! Friend Michelle and her Fab! co-worker Jocelyn, I headed to the Women’s Shoe Department and found a line of business-casual clad ladies, waiting patiently to receive a yellow armband , denoting their 21+ age status, and a complimentary Fashion Boston tote.

Waiting patiently to enter Shoe Diva heaven!

Once we’d obtained our armbands and totes, Michelle, Jocelyn, and I made our way to the cocktail area, but quickly met with a substantial line of attendees who were waiting to get their drink on, so we opted to do a little shoe shopping first. Sadly, I was a little disappointed with Macy’s shoe selection. The event had advertised a showing of the season’s hottest footwear, yet I definitely spied quite a few styles that screamed “Summer ’08”…yikes! While we perused the shoes, we were treated to hors d’oeuvres, including mozzarella and spinach skewers, courtesy of The Ivy, which were served by three, male models, who were quite easy on the eyes…wink-wink…

Nothing like some eye candy while you do a little shoe shopping-:)

Now, that's food presentation!

After a half hour or so, we decided to give the bar another try. This time around, we were successful and rewarded with our choice of three delicious cocktails, provided by Beija Chachaca Vodka. Crowd favorites appeared to be the Beija Clear Storm and the Beija Blueberry Bliss, which incorporated the flavors of ginger beer and blueberries, respectively. While enjoying our cocktails, Michelle, Jocelyn, and I noticed that M.A.C. make-up artists had set-up shop in a corner, to give mini-makeovers, which many women were taking advantage of, pre-and post-shoe purchases.

Ready, Set, Shop!

As 7:00 p.m. rolled around, everyone’s attention was drawn to the runway that had been set up in the middle of the shoe department. A Macy’s representative, along with, Hello Stilletto founder, Melissa O’Shea took to the stage and proceeded to inform the crowd of the hottest upcoming trends in shoe styles everywhere, from open-toed booties to stacked heel oxfords. To accompany them, a bevy of models walked the runway, showcasing a variety of Macy’s offerings in fall shoe styles. Music for the fashion show was provided by Soulclap, a Boston-based company, specializing in dance music. At times, I couldn’t help but be distracted from the fashion show, by Soulclap’s DJs, who appeared to be enjoying their musical selections, a little too much…let’s just say, it was a bit reminiscent of a “Night At The Roxbury”…LOL…

Following the show, attendees were invited to participate in a “walk-off” competition, where they strutted their stuff and their own fabulous shoes, for a chance to win the title of “Best In Shoe.” After 37 models-in-the-making, had their moment in the spotlight, the grand prize went to a young woman, sporting leopard-print stilettos. There were definitely individuals who some believed had been cheated of the title, specifically a sista’ rockin’ some killer yellow heels…go ahead, girl!

Everyone needs a pair of leather black boots

Despite no purchases made by us, the evening was quite enjoyable and an entertaining reminder that a woman can never have too many shoes!

*Hello Stiletto is a FREE social club for individuals who love shoes. Originally founded in Boston in 2004, the club has grown to over 6,000 members in eleven cities. Check out their website for local events, where you can rock your favorite pumps, stilettos, or boots!

Recap: Boston Fashion Week: Denise Hajjar | M2L Gallery

My first real taste of Boston Fashion Week was last night at the M2L Gallery (104 Boylston Street). This furniture gallery was turned into a place for networking and viewing fashion by local designer Denise Hajjar - her boutique is located at 138 St. James Avenue.

Aerial View

The set up was very interesting with plenty of seating from the gallery, hor d' oeuvres scattered about on both of the floors and a wine bar on the second floor. Instead of a runway show the four or five models emerged from the basement and walked around interacting with the guests telling us about the pieces that they were wearing. This was a good way to see how the close were really worn and you were able to ask questions about the pieces, though sometimes they didn't have the answers.

I thought that the lines and the tailoring of the collection was impeccable, but the actual designs were more for the Boston Socialite or women over 40. Some of her handbags were very nice and the jewelry collection feature (though not of the designer) also had some very unique pieces.

Mixing and mingling

Model wearing a peacock necklace I admired...

It was a great atmosphere and a great use of that space. The fashion wasn't really my cup of tea, but I might stop by the boutique to get a closer look at some of the jewelery. It was fab!

Recap: Boston Public Library’s Fashion Week Film Series: Chanel, Chanel

Fabulously Submitted by BostonFab! Correspondent Chanelle

When I found out that the Boston Public Library (700 Boylston St, Downtown) was hosting a free screening of the film, Chanel, Chanel (1986), for Boston Fashion Week, I couldn’t resist heading down to the Copley Branch to learn about the life and times of the woman whose eponymous perfume had served as inspiration for my very own name.

As I made my way into the Raab Lecture Hall, I found myself in a room closely resembling those that I had sat in numerous times, during my college days. However, after taking stock of the other attendees, I realized that I wasn’t on campus anymore, as the majority of the audience resembled the 40+ crowd. Luckily, I wasn’t the youngest in attendance, as I did spy a few other twenty-somethings filing into the auditorium.

Be it the infamous Chanel suit, the elaborate costume jewelry, the scent that has stood the hands of time, or the quilted handbag that many covet, Coco Chanel’s influence on the world of fashion is undeniable. Yet, Chanel, Chanel introduced me to the woman behind one of the most famous fashion houses of all time. Gabrielle (Coco) Chanel, a product of humble beginnings, in the south of France, was a feisty, outspoken woman who believed that “fashion passes, style remains.” Who would have thought that a young girl, who learnt to sew in an orphanage, would one day be described as a “symbol for an entire period”? For, even today, Chanel maintains a significant presence in fashion , from the runways of fashion weeks to the closets of woman everywhere.

The Boston Public Library has featured screening s of select fashion films on Mondays at 6pm, throughout the month of September. The remaining films are Funny Face (1957), on September 22nd, and Ready To Wear (1994), on September 29th. Check ‘em out and take a moment to celebrate fashion at its best!

Stay tuned for more coverage of Boston Fashion Week!!

Stay Fab! :)

Mini Recap: Boston Fashion Week Opening Reception

Me and my gal pals headed over to the Boston Fashion Week Opening night at the Hyatt Terrace (One Avenue de la Lafayette, Downtown, Theater District) exactly at 9 p.m. because we rec'd numerous e-mails saying if we weren't there by 10 p.m. we wouldn't get in. But it turned out not to be a big deal at all. When we arrived there were only a handful of people there.

People slowly arriving to the terrace

We were immediately served with Dixie cup samplers of the Mojito by Bicardi...it tasted more like a shot than a sample...dag that thing was strong! But free...gotta love free.

The hor d' oeuvres table was well...small.. I think that my Fab! Friend Melissa got the last of the grapes. And there was only one bar available to purchase drinks.

Hors d' oeuvre table...notice the ratio of food to the number of plates...

The last of the hors d' oeuvres

The terrace itself is very nice, very relaxing and located on the 3rd floor of the hotel which give a nice view of the buildings downtown and is designed to shade you from the wind. I thought that it being a cold night they would have some heat lamps or something to keep people warm...but unfortunately this was not the case. I thought that they would move the party inside perhaps, but they didn't do that either. I wonder how they purpose to use the multi-million dollar renovated space in a place where the weather is cold more than half the year...

As the temperatures continued to drop we all had to admit our bodies couldn't withstand the cold any longer and had to call it a night at 10:20. We missed the fashion show that was to begin at 11:00 and from what we saw, a lot of others did the same.

Guess it's time to bust out the winter jackets! If you suffered through and actually saw the show leave your impressions in the comment box!
