Recap: Common Album Release Party

As Fab! as your girl is - it takes a lot (besides a holiday) to get me out on a Monday night. But when you’re talking about Common coming to Boston for free? Uh- yeah your girl is there!

Now I don’t know what was up with the promotions for this team switching it from District to Venu at the last minute. I mean I’m glad that they were able to accommodate more people, but that should have been a given…I also thought it was shady that they raised the price for guys after they moved the Venu and especially after 12 p.m. Missed you Chris!!

Fab! Friend Jax and BostonFab!

Anyways I rushed over there after work to get there around 10:45 p.m. – there was a line, but it went relatively quickly compared to some events at Venu – you know they gotta check bags for weapons, pat you down… we did get to see Common enter the club through the front door. Uh- what kind of VIP treatment are you giving my man?

Since I was in my down jacket I decided to do coat check – usually I’m a stasher, but the second room wasn’t open. It was like $4 a piece = $8!! They are sooo nuts with that. But I had to give it to ‘em since I figured I didn’t pay to get in, but I certainly didn’t want to stop at the bar after that.

Geespin was on the 1’s and 2’s and I headed to the dance floor where he was taking pictures with anyone and everyone. My boo was sooo nice! He would let people take them over if they were bad, do funny pictures, compliment people andseemed half-way genuine while doing it. After that Geespin got into some more tunes, but I was a lil’ curious as to why he didn’t play more Common. He played like 3 songs. Ugh.

I let my Fab! Friend Jax get the pic...we don't like to show affection in public ;)

The crowd waiting for a picture

Then outta no where!! Common comes to the stage and performs 4 of his oldies! I was super happy that I was in the front so I got some good shots, but I kinda wanted him to perform something new. I thought this was an introduction to his new album? And why does my boo always have to look straight into the crowd? I mean look down. I’m right here for you! *Sigh…;)

Common performing

After his short performance there was more dancing and a bunch of random people took over the VIP space where the stage was and by 12:45 he was out. Geespin played his single “Universal Mind Control” the title track, but other than that…I got no new music. Man.

So this listening party was kinda what you paid for -$8 in coat check. But I was glad for another opportunity for me and my boo to connect.

Shout outs to my party hustlers that were in the building Greg , Era, Liz (I saw you walking across the stage on my man’s coat tails- LOVE the new doo!), Akrobatik, DJ Nomadik, Rob, MJ, Sammy aka “Mr. West”

Stay Fab!

Picture Recap: Ecstacy | Venu

My lovely Fab! Photographer Deniece shared these photos of The Nightlife Executives Ecstacy party at Venu last Monday. I was a bit worried I wouldn't make it in as both rooms were packed by 12 a.m. and the bartenders are seriously heavy handed! But as you can see we had a great time!! But what is up with the half nak'd women dancing on stage?... Upscale...classy...and - uh - nak'd? Suspect. We are already outnumbered in the club and then you add other chicks to the mix...I mean dag! Can we get some equal opportunity?...I'm just sayin...

*Side Note: A Fab! Fan (sorry I don't recall your name boo, I couldn't hear!) asked that promoters start bringing parties back to the hood...this is HIS comment...just thought I'd share.

Keep it Fab! ;)

Mad folks...where were you?

Fab! Friend Melissa, BostonFab! and Fab! CFO Erika

Can I get to the bar please?? That's Tito's head :)

Fab! Photographer Deniece and K. Pritty of the Nightlife Execs

The dancers took a break, but no one else did

Recap: The Executive Affair Reception

Getting me ready to go to the club at 8 p.m. is quite a feat even for a K. Pritty and J. Francois soiree. But I do my best to respond to personal invitations...and arrived around 9 p.m. My other fab! friends had arrived at 8:30 and were told they weren't finished with preparations, though the invitation said it started at 8. Fortunately most other guests didn't arrive 'til after I did, so it wasn't too big of a deal.

A top of the stairs to Venu, There was an area with the Nightlife Executives logo where people were doing shout outs on a video camera.

The spread was nice - you know me, I gotta peep the hors d' oeuvres table. It was decked out with chocolate covered strawberries, shrimp cocktail, cheese and fruit. They had large plates made of recyclable plates - love the eco-consciousness, but would have been nice if they were aperitif size - we women tend to get a little self conscious when we eat in a dinner dress - and some napkins would have been a nice touch. But I still got a nice helping of cheese and strawberries. Yummy.

The appertizer spread

The decorations

Our MC for the evening was Alicia from Young Black Women's Society who kindly introduced one of the acts of entertainment for the evening a group called Serenity. While my Fab! Fashion correspondent did think that they could have used a little more guidance on their attire, their voices were certainly something to listen to. They really connected with the audience with their rendition of some of Mary J's tunes.

Serenity

Soon the bar opened up with free Hennessey for all, which was really nice, it wasn't an actual tasting so we just went with Hennessy's and coke. Some did it with Red Bull...but that is a lil' too dangerous for me. :)

Mixing and mingling continued as I got to say hello to Darius of Downtimeonline.net, who still has more to come on the website as well as Tito Jackson who let me know the Michael Jackson vs. Prince II Halloween party is coming...y'all ain't ready ;) - stay locked on the Fab! for more details.

"Music Man" Alonzo Harris also got on the mike with his band and sang one of my favorites when he sings Common's "I want you." He usually really gets into the crowd, but was hemmed up by the microphone cord or else it would have been on Alonzo - bet! :) and even Alicia sang her rendition of "Sweet Thang" - everybody got a dream y'all - nah girl you did a nice job as well! ;)

In between musical interludes were fashion show produced by Iman Models of local designers. Sparklle Thames, Avari Thomas and Stephanie Green of Greenhaus, and Lit on Newberry. And I gotta say, their designs were much better than some I saw during Boston Fashion Week. Anybody thought of having a Urban Boston Fashion Week? Or working to get more designers of colors in the mix of Boston Fashion Week? I'm jus' saying...entreprenuers...work on that :) Here's a sample of the fashions...

At the end of the night, the men of the hour were asked to come on stage and say a few words. J. Francois thanked everybody for coming and even gave a shout out to the Fab! thanks! There was also a shout out to the production teams and such, but I didn't have my notepad - I'm tired of waiting on you Jeff - Guess I'll have to get my independent woman on and get my own - thanks...for no-ting. If you want to know all the names of the production teams, they will eventually (you know how they do) show up on their website www.nightlifeexecs.com

The men of the hour J. Francois and K. Pritty, as well as host Alicia

They really pulled off a wonderful event, I felt exclusive, the decorations were a great touch - tables with candles, the entertainment, everything was really on point.

Great way to start things off guys. Congrats!!

Recap: Onyx | Venu

Last night I dug deep y'all and headed out to Venu (100 Warrenton St, Theater District) hosted by the Harvard Business School African American Student Union. Me and Fab! CFO Erika showed up around 11:30 thinking that we would be early and found the place to be already packed! Guess these people take their partying seriously!

The crowd at 11:30 p.m.

I peeped the crowd and it was international. Everyone stuck with the dress code of black, but it was varied with cocktail dresses to jeans to suits and ties. Although this party was primarily for the Business School I saw a few people from the Medical School and the Law school - Shout out to the ladies of S.U.E.D.E.!!! - looking lovely as always.

The atmosphere was alright...ratio the woman certainly ran the floor, but I was glad to see people really dancing and getting down. Having that said the place got hot quick and although I saw a few fans scattered about the room, there was certainly no air-conditioning. With sweaty body's and no ventilation the dance floor smelled like arm pits...wet sweaty armpits. I mean, I get it, I know you're coming from work, or school - maybe you took a taxi or rode the T...but y'all are business people - remember - never let them see you sweat and certainly don't let them smell you!! Hygiene is so important! Get the funk under control!

Actin' like they don't have school in the morning...

DJ R.E.GG did a decent job of getting people dancing, but didn't go outside of the box and stuck mostly to early 2000 hits. I felt so bad when he played the "Cupid Shuffle" and the crowd look thoroughly confused. I did like the placement of the DJ on the stage rather than having it a VIP area. (There were no VIP areas at this party which was also nice) So you got a full view of his entertaining animated faces. Transitions were good and he didn't spend a lot of time on mike, so he did his job, but I wasn't overly impressed.

DJ. R.E.GG focused man

At the end of the night gotta say this was certainly a college party. There were plenty of shout outs to "Section E", "Class of 2010" I kept waiting for "Represent your click"- but was fortunately spared.

If I were a Business School student this would have probably been the best ish ever!! And would have taken the opportunity to dance with the cutie I had been eyeing in Econ. So, from an outsiders view I think it was certainly an "A" time. The fact that it was packed out on a Wednesday says volumes about their marketing strategy and hype-a-bility.

As for me..., eh - it was just another day at the office :)

BostonFab!

Shout out to Windell!! Thanks for subscribing! And trying to get me to smile!

Stay Fab! :)

Recap: Prestige | Club Venu

If you didn't know about the Prestige party I don't know where you'd been!! E-mail, after e-mail, updates, text messages...dag! I was surprised I didn't get loud speaker announcement when I arrived at the parking garage at work. DAG y'all can we say OVER ADVERTISING.

Yo - K. Pritty and J. Francois...we're comin'. :)

Photo: Already starting to get packed.

But, I guess it worked because by the time I arrived at 10:45 p.m. there was already a line around the block. Man-oh-man was I glad that I bought my tickets before hand 'cuz for those who didn't it cost them $30 a pop. OUCH!!

Photo: Deniece and Boston Fab! doining our Fab! thing

Once inside the crowd was sparse, but then again, Venu always likes to keep them waiting. The club itself is pretty nice, with a dark room and a light room, plenty of couches for the VIP's, but the management I could do without. They are the typical rude herders, that make ya mad by the end of the night like you should be thanking them for even allowing you to be in their establishment. Pah-lease.

Anyways so I headed to the bar and it was pricey! I forgot their drinks run around $12 a pop. Me and my girl Deniece tried to get the advertised Roq Candy, but I guess they were only serving it at one bar, and we never found out which one. I saw like one person with the rock candy on the stick. But I wasn't too disappointed because I am not a fan of Hypnotq, but still...can't stand false advertising. And no, I did not see a fashion show, yet again. I wish they would quit advertising that there will be a show when there is never any time for one. Just have people wear the clothes and walk around. It's much easier that way.

Photo: My girl and Boston Fab! Fan, Chanelle

Anyways... The Hypnotq girls did give some people these cool lights, which I am not sure what I am going to do with, but whatev. Though, they did come in handy if you wanted to check out a cutie more closely. It was so dark in there! I walked by people to "dap up" and they acted like they didn't know a sistah - ahem - R.O.B. - At first I was kinda offended, but then again I'm sure I missed a few people myself. Consider this my public apology.

As for the music, um...my new fav DJ Backspin ..has lost his title - just from me, though. He did the typical "Where my ladies at..." and his set was good, but too "commercial" for my taste, I know, I'm picky. But as for the other patrons, they were having a good time dancing and sweating. The ladies certainly ran the floor, though it is rare that they don't *sigh. The dance floor got packed QUICK!, making the temperature rise just as fast. I dunno if the air conditioning wasn't working or if there were just so many daggone people, but yeah, I was literally gasping for air at some points.

In Room 2, DJ Massive was doin' his thing, but unfortunately nobody stayed over there except to cool off from Room 1. I am not exactly sure what was going on...he had some equipment issues at a couple of points, and though the songs were good, it just never amounted to anything that made people want to be in there as opposed to Room 1.

Photo: Room 2 kinda empty....

Round 1 goes to DJ Backspin :)

At 11:45, The door was still crazy and, my friend, who had pre-bought tickets, left because the pre-paid line was too long. I told her to get there early!! I'm sure she wasn't the only one so for those of you who paid, but didn't get in - ooooh sorry! Party foul!

One key ingredient that was missing from this party was the presence of K. Pritty and J. Francois. Don't get me wrong, I was glad they were on their game and were some hustlin' mo' fo's, but I know that people missed their time to shine with them and chit chat.

The Photographer, Daniel, was on his game though and caught some interesting candids.

Photo: Promoters K. Pritty and J. Francois sandwich Ms. Deniece

The ladies were def, on their game. Guys. Don't ever say that J and Pritty don't bring out the ladies because they do! You can find a wifey, a boo, a grind-for-one-night. They were all there! Lookin' good ladies! And they really stuck with the upscale...classy... okay well...kinda...depends on how you define classy ;) at least most of them wore clothes that fit their shape. I gotta give them that.

Dudes...you a-ight. SOME of you were dancing...most of you were at the bar....shame, shame shame.

Photo: Dudes on the perimeter as usual...

So my thoughts on Prestige was that it was THE place to be at for your pre-4th of July Celebration in Boston, and another somewhat - classy :), fun, night courtesy of the Boston's Promo Kings. But, the crazy line was a blessing and a curse, the sweltering Room 1, the non-existent drink special, and fashion show put this party at a solid B

Stay Fab! :)

THIS JUST IN! "The It Factor"Cancelled??

After changing locations to accommodate the crowd, it looks like "The It Factor" from promoters Mistrie, Klutch, E1 Live! Entertainment and CAN Entertainment has been CANCELLED!!

Sooooo...all y'all who RSVP'd will need to get on somebody else's list and fast!! Scroll BostonFab! for alternatives.

*Fab Girl Tip: It is likely that other parties, namely Prestige at Venu (100 Warrenton St, Theater District) will reach capacity more quickly than expected. If it's that serious for you (as it is for me, because I pre-paid :)). Get there early!! And please, please, pah-lease act appropriately. Dress appropriately, tip the bartenders, leave the drama with your Mamma. There is a reason why we have "difficulty" finding places to go out in Boston. Don't let a few trifflin' folk ruin it for the rest of us!

Stay FAB! - Naw - like, for real tho'

President's Day Weekend | Mistrie and Klutch Present Blazers and Stillettos

In hot competition with the J.Francois event, Mistrie and Klutch are throwing "Blazers and Stilletos" (they are really wearing those stilettos, dang! I’m gonna have to get some new tips), which will be held at Club Venu ( 100 Warrenton Street, Downtown).

DJ Geespin and DJ Backspin (what's up with the rhyming? They family or sumptin?) will be hypin' us up. Of course you better be sportin’ stilettos and blazers…hence the theme y’all, as they are REQUIRED. (boo on that)
