The place was packed but in a good way. Though the food was reasonable (my waffle without chicken [I'm a vegetarian!!] was only $2) the food line was serious! People got frustrated waiting sometimes over 15 minutes; people even ran back to the kitchen to get their own food…wow. When you hungry, you hungry….I heard the chicken was slammin’ and several people left with to-go boxes.
If you go to Slade’s expecting an upscale joint, you will be disappointed. The décor is minimal and food is served on styrofoam plates with plastic silverware. If they are as busy as they were on Thursday night - you will end up busing your own table. My Merlot was served in a champagne glass and the rest of the drinks were served in plastic cups. But one good thing about Slade's is that they do not skimp on the liquor. A vodka tonic will set you back only about $5 and it is's 3/4ths vodka.
Although the event was sponsored by The Boston Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, I was hard pressed to find any... although the event brought out quite an array of business professionals. This was definitely a good place to exchange business cards and make new connections.
I would recommend this spot for the "after work/ non-pretentious" types who can loosen their tie, suck on a chicken bone and throw back a strong drink while listening to some local jazz. If you aren’t into that scene, you still may want to stop by for a plate to-go when you get a cravin' for some good soul food.
Stay fab :) !
