Interview: Barbershop Lounge | Newberry St.

Now y'all know I love my men, lookin' good, smellin' good and feelin' good so when avid reader Jarreau asked me to check out this hip spot Barber Shop Lounge (245 Newberry St) I was more than happy to oblige.

I headed there with my Fab! Friend and Big City Radio 101.3 FM radio personality Aaron Wright (also of Blumist Entertainment) to get a treatment and let me know his thoughts.

(Thank you!!)

When we first entered the establishment we really got to see what made this place unique, with an open floor plan and great decor of black and red. In the first area, there are two stations. As you continue to the back there is a bar area where you are invited to sip on some bottled water or maybe a cappuccino. There's a pool table with a round plush couch that serves as a waiting area or can be utilized if people want to stop by for a game of pool. Nice! Plasma screens are placed in strategic areas throughout the floor for viewing.

I was met by manager Judy Fogarty who was instrumental in the design of the shop. Aaron was whisked away to the treatment room by aesthetician Stephanie for a 20 minute scalp massage. I asked if I could go with him to take photos, but guests are not allowed in the rooms; talk about real exclusive!

I hoped Aaron was in trusted hands as I sat down with Judy and asked some questions about The Lounge.

BostonFab!:
So how did the Barbershop idea come about?

Judy: Three Boston real estate developers one of which is Bruce Miller, traveled a lot on business around the world and came across some great barbershop lounges, but when they would come back home to Boston found nothing comparable here and decided to use real estate they owned on Newberry to start the project.

BostonFab!: What are some of the treatments men can get here?

Judy: A cut, of course, hot lather shaves, scalp treatment, hand treatment, foot treatment, massages, skin treatment; it's really a spa for men.

BostonFab!: How do you choose the people that work here? What makes them unique to other salons?

Judy: What makes them unique is their experience. We typically use seasoned stylists and barbers that are experts in the field. There is a separate person that is the facial groomer than the person that is the hair stylist or who does foot treatments, etc.

BostonFab!: This space is great and the services seem to be as well; what are some of the reactions of people that come in here for the first time?

Judy: They are surprised in general and then also surprised about how comfortable they feel here. They can play pool while they wait, have a beverage, relax. All the treatments are done in a private room, so [men feel comfortable getting a] foot massage or a hand treatment. Treatment rooms are intimate, private and comfortable with individual flat screen televisions and all of the amenities of a spa treatment room. Frequently men come here and they don't know what to expect; we try to give them the most enjoyable, unique experience as possible.

BostonFab!: Do you have any celebrity clientele, I saw that you did Locks of Love and Bill Cosby stopped by...any other regular celebrity clients?

Judy: We do get a lot of athletes, especially runners as it is crucial for their sport to keep their feet healthy with regular foot treatments, we have several clients from the Bruins, Jacoby Elsberry and Jed Cowrie of the Red Sox. We will have a group of celebrity guests come in next week, that I'm sure you'll see in the media once they arrive. But honestly, everyone is a VIP here.

BostonFab!: So Judy, what makes Barbershop Lounge Fab!?

Judy: Oh wow...I wasn't expecting that question...I guess it would be the concept; [an] exclusive, full service salon for men. It's an experience in affordable luxury.

Just as we were finishing up our interview Aaron came down looking much more relaxed and refreshed than he did going up. "Man, that was really nice. I think I really would come back like every week, no for real though." Scalp treatments are $25 for 20 minutes. Trim shape up of a bear or mustache $15, Hot shave $25, Hand treatment $15.

A haircut will run you $45, but Judy mentioned that although they did specialize in all hair types, they did not have a lot of "ethnic" clientele. But y'all know I'ma gonna keep it real with y'all, if you are serious about your cut keep your barber and gift yourself a treatment. Yearly packages and memberships are available and they will work with you to create a package that fits your lifestyle.

And ladies you can pamper your man for the holidays! Gift cards are available online. :)

Men you deserve to treat yourselves and this is definitely a fab! way to do it.
