I rolled into Z Square (14 JFK St, Harvard Square, Cambridge) around 11:30 - solo. My usual crew was outta town, my friend canceled on me at the last minute but I was like you know what - I'm going to dare to be different tonight - I am not going to spend one more wasted night watching Lifetime and Fresh Prince re-runs until 3 a.m....I'm flying solo.
To anyone who ever wants to attempt this here are some tips:
1) You are not allowed under any circumstances to "phone home", text or play video games on your cell phone. The point of flying solo is to mix and mingle on your own. Be in the moment. Leave the celly alone.
2) Be visible. Don't hide yourself in the crowd making people think you aren't by yourself. Find a prime spot where you will be seen, you want people to know you are by yourself and are comfortable with it.
3) Be social. The cool thing about not hanging out with a crew is that you can talk to people maybe you've seen before but didn't have the chance to say hey to because your girl who was driving had to go RIGHT NOW...or you're taking care of one of your girls who had one too many. This is your time to shine. Go for it!
Back to the recap:
When I got there, the party had already started. People were having a good ol' time at the bar, getting drinks and snacking on mini burgers and chicken skewers (Um - can we get sumtin' for the vegetarians!!) People were grubbin' tho...I even caught the servers snackin'.
At the bar I asked for the drink special of K. Pritty/ J. Francois. I thought they were two separate drinks, but it was just one...The bartender told me what was in it, but all I could remember was that it had Hennessey and cost $12 (He reminded me like 4x that it was $12 *sigh... I almost put a $20 in front of him and told him keep the change but we're in a recession. LOL). It was ai-ight, probably wouldn't order another one but y'all know I don't do dark liquor.

I do have to say something about the bartender on the left hand side of the bar (I saw y'all heading to that side...good reading) , though he does make a good drink and can keep it straight much more than the other bartenders, I was so annoyed when his free loading friends came up to the bar when the line was already crazy!! And he didn't make them a rum and coke, he made a serious, brown-sugar-round-the-rim kinda drink. I'm like dude...really tho? I'm fine with takin' care of your partnas and all but can't you pre-make that stuff? Or at least be slick with it...
The overall vibe of the party had a different flava. It seemed like all the neighborhoods came together - from Dorchester to Cambridge, which was pretty cool. DJ Select did a good job of mixin' old skool, reggae and some new school, but kept it real 90's. He did throw in a couple of new songs which brought the crowd to a dead hault but I gotta give him props for tryin'.

The only major faux pas was when 20 minutes before the end of the night his equipment blew! AGAIN with the equipment issues...is there a shortage of electronic stores in Boston or something? My entrepreneurs pah-lease get on this!!!.... Fortunately he got it back on in a few moments but people were quite agitated.

Speaking of agitation, it was a friggin' hot box in there!! And I can't even blame it on the air-conditioning because it was on. There were just so many dag gone people sweating and twirkin' that there was no escape! To me this signifies a good party but Bostonians are not used to partying under these grave conditions.
A word of advice: It's summer...an extra layer of deodorant, perfume, cocoa butter and/or baby powder IS needed. My advice to the ladies of the Perm and Press and Yaki nations, pull it back, or if ya gots to, purchase a nice synthetic wig :) And don't over do the make-up...by the end of the night most of it will be melted into a bar napkin.
If all else fails...embrace the beauty within :)
In the end Boston's Promo Kings showed us a good ol' (sweaty) time. I give this party an B+.
*Big ups to Boston Fab! fans Era, Shanita, Kafui and friends for letting me hang with y'all. Also showin' much fab! luv to Mr. Von Diddles and to Edgar of So Good Entertainment who were also in the building.

Looks like I'll be flying solo a lot this summer - who knows? Your crew may be the next one I crash! :)
Stay Fab! :)
