Recap: The Blarney Stone

On Friday night, I headed over to The Blarney Stone (1505 Dorchester Avenue, Dorchester) with a few of my girls. Although this restaurant/bar is known in the Dorchester community as a place to throw back Guinness with the Irish crowd I thought I'd give it a try.

After 11:30 PM on a Friday night, the place still wasn’t very crowded. At the door, we were greeted by a bouncer who asked us to show ID to get in. And as I was pulling out my money to pay the cover charge he told me there was none. NO COVER! Wow, what a different look for Boston :). I just might start a petition to get other spots to follow suit!

When you walked in, you immediately noticed how big the place is. The room has wonderful raised ceilings and exposed brick. A few pool tables are mixed in with a generous dance floor. This spot is perfect to check out on a warm summer night. There is even a great patio with an outdoor bar!

At the wrap around bar complete with a very nice bartender Ben (who is a doll and had a thick Irish accent of course!), we ordered yummy Pear Martinis and by the time they kicked in I finally noticed the music.

The DJ brought it back with a homage to Boston and a mix of BBD, New Edition, and Bobby Brown! He even played Come and Talk to Me by Jodeci! I am the biggest Jodeci fan so I was in R&B heaven (and the crowd loved it too!).

Overall, I had a great time at The Blarney Stone! By stepping outside of my comfort zone I discovered a new spot in the Bean! This is an ideal place on to go on a night when you just want to relax and aren't worried about being 'seen’.

I’ll definitely head back this summer!

Pritty are vamping up their usual Saturday Night Special at Z-Square (14 JFK St, Harvard Square, Cambridge) for The Commencement (such a "classic" :) title, but I like the flyer!), to celebrate the undergraduate and graduate student graduates of the class of 2008.

The Sheraton Commander is a very nice hotel so maybe they really are working on catering to the more upscale. We shall see...

I recommend purchasing tickets online for this event as 9 Alarms can be unorganized at times. Right now the link says one ticket costs $9,999...they need to fix that quick!

Recap: V.I.P. Party | Stix Ultra Lounge

I got myself to Stix Lounge ( 35 Stanhope Street, Back Bay) around 10:30 p.m. and headed downstairs. I really liked the ambiance of the room with a long leather couch that lined the far wall with a long bar area parallel to it. I could tell that this as a great place to kick back, relax and have intimate conversations.

I arrived after the free apps of chicken skewers and roasted potatoes so I asked a fellow patron what they thought of the food and he said, it was so-so - I guess they got what they paid for. :)

I got a space at the bar, but there was only one bartender so I waited a good ten minutes for my Ciroc vodka with tonic. I must admit the vodka is very very smooth but doesn’t have the same after effects of Grey Goose or my ultra favorite Belvedere. But the drink was served in an ultra swanky swerve shaped glass, which was very cool.

Around 11:30 p.m. they opened the upstairs. It looked very nice with back lighting on the ceiling over wooden panels and a bar that changed colors. You would think that the decor signified a great night, right? Ummm not so much.

It started with the coat check…uh... what coat check? Apparently there was someone who was going to come and take our coats some where…but she never showed up so I ended up stashing my coat near the DJ booth. Sooo un fab...

DJ Dru Nyce, who apparently set up for like 2 hours, because we didn’t see him doing a doggone thing while I straight up started listening to my half-cousin's iPod. And when he finally did set up…I kept saying “Eh…what’s that song?” It was mad muffled…when you can hear more private conversations than song lyrics, there is an issue. I spoke with one of the promoters that said the DJ forgot a cord that he needed in order to access the sound system properly. My thing is – this is your event…if the DJ forgets a cord you should be hustlin' to get a cord from somewhere. I know you still made your money but dang….I didn't dance all night. :(

Then the bar…okay so you know how I get about slow bartenders, and yes there were a lot of people, but come on!! You are a bartender, the majority of your take home is in tips…if you won’t do it for me, do it for the hustle. We waited like 15 minutes for our drinks, I was like screw this I’m going back downstairs to the other bar…well that was a big fat NO because the downstairs lounge was at capacity. I didn't know different rooms in a club could be at capacity… I thought we were all V.I.P tonight - my bad. So, after a few people left, I got "access" to the downstairs lounge, and as I am leaving patrons were asking the bouncer “can I get back in later?” and the bouncer was like “Man, I dunno.” Really?? Well at least he was nice about it.

(Pre-paying will get you in, but it won't get you dancing...)

As for the crowd, - the V.I.P.-ness was not strongly felt. I mean some people really showed out and the dudes did put on suits, but I still saw some people in jeans -chillaxin. I'm like why say the dress code will be enforced if it’s not? I could have saved an outfit.

J. Francois, K. Pritty and Mr. West really dropped the ball on this one. I absolutely loved the venue, and the concept had great potential, but I just didn’t feel the usual hustle of the promoters - they were real slack with it. Maybe pre-paying isn't such a good idea if they are going to take our patronage for granted. I felt bad for Sammy 'cuz this certainly wasn't a proper farewell. Better luck in New York and safe travels, man.

I unfortunately gotta give this party a very disappointed C.

Let's hope this is just a glitch in a series usually stellar events.

TONIGHT! P. Diddy Ciroc Vodka VIP Party | Stix Lounge

Tonight Stix Lounge (35 Stanhope St, Back Bay) is the place to be for another J. Francois and K. Pritty and Sammy aka Mr. West (why everybody got a stage name? ;)) affair. Be sure to show Sammy some serious love becasue it's also his farewell party!

Start off the night at 9 p.m. on the lounge floor with a P. Diddy Ciroc vodka private sampling with complimentary appetizers and plenty of screens to view the NBA Playoffs. Reduced admission is $10 if you show up before 10 p.m. after that it's $20.

The flyer also says that if you get a ticket on-line it's guaranteed admission, but the guest list closes at 11:30....a little confusing...so I would say tickets or not show up before 11:30. And bring your confirmation! *Fab Girl Tip: Back Bay parking is serious! Be prepared to pay for parking or ladies stash some flats 'cuz you might be walking a while.

Dress code is ultra classy as always...bring your A game. ;)

Recap: The Roots After Party | Underbar,

So we walked down from the Erykah Badu concert to the Underbar (275 Tremont street) which is actually inside of Caprice on the bottom floor. The line was a little crazy. First we had to talk to a man then talk to another man in a suit, were told that we couldn’t block the side walk and I showed my ID like three times.

Then finally got downstairs...only to get into another line!!

So those of us who pre-paid had to wait in line on the left and people who were paying at the time, got to get in line on the right then go right in…errrr? Then after the hostess crossed my name off the list she gave me a ticket and I thought “Oh…okay after waiting in 2 lines and being harassed, I get compensated with a free drink, nicccceee…” So, I said to the lady with anticipation “What is this for?” She goes “You give it to the bouncer…” I’m like thinkng…the guy that is literally 2 steps away from me and watched you give me the ticket? Really? Uh have y’all heard of global warming? Save some trees and use your short term memory skills…

*Fab Girl Tip! Don't get tickets in advanced. This place is huge! There is no need to worry that you won't get in.

Soooo okay finally inside, I quickly went to the bar and ordered a my staple grey goose and tonic, and it was made right. The bartender was friendly and did not make me look like an idiot when I mistakeningly heard $8 (a normal drink price), instead of $12 (what the actual price of the drink was….yeah). With drink in hand I finally got to take in the décor and wow, this place is hot!

With circular white counches strategically placed and that anybody can sit on…(VIP is on an upper level) to the bamboo covered DJ booth and beach pebble laden pillars, this place gave a cool vibe without being pretentious. There was plenty of room and since the room is circular you can see the entire club from any angle…good if you spot a cutie, bad if you have a stalker...lol This is my new favorite venue!

The crowd was mostly caucasian…where were we at?? And though it was pretty packed, me and my girl Jax managed to find a space next to the DJ booth to get our party on.

So DJ Questlove is…can you say the sickest illest (yes illiest) DJ I have heard in a long time!!…I mean he had a point…he was really vibing mixing rock n’ roll with today’s hip hop, to serious old skool and funk…I literally thought I was going to lose my mind dancing like I didn't have to go to work in the morning!!!...which I did :( Erykah blessed us with her presence once again (wearing some crazy bottle glasses), and The Black Thought got on the mike and just killed it!

For those of you who missed checking him out he seems to frequent the Underbar at least a couple of times a year, so be sure to catch him the next time he is in town. This was serioulsy one of the best nights I have ever had in Boston!

Recap: Erykah Badu and The Roots | Orpheum Theater

Last night was my first Roots and Erykah Badu concert and I was in for a much needed soul, hip hop, funk revival. I had never been to the Orpheum Theater (115 Hamilton Place, Downtown Crossing), which is just off of Tremont street, but it proved to be a great venue for this type of show. The old theater w/ hip hop played to the idea of yin and yang…opposites truly attracted as the blended crowd of patrons were buzzing with the vibe of ‘anticipation’ that something special was about to take place.

The Roots started performing promptly at 7:30 and refused to allow us to stay in our seats with the rendition of “You got me” guitarist Capt. Kirk took it to another level with playing rifts that scaled the walls. They had one serious jam session that went on for quite some time, but no one minded. After only 5 or 6 songs they finished off their set and left the stage. I thought they would do at least a few more songs, but they were probably getting ready for the afterpaty.

After a 40 minute wait with no other acts, or even a DJ on stage, we waited for Erykah to grace us with her prescence. When she finally showed she did so in true dramatic fashion with a beehive wig and black layered mini dress. Very fab.

It is rumored that the beats of her latest album were created completely off of her apple lap top, courtesy of lessons from her young son, so she had the lap top on the stage so just before each song she would press “enter” to drop the beat and then the rest of the band came in. There was other odd behavior; her fascination with beating a drum and touching synthesizer keys for no apparent reason. She seems to be in love with sound at this phase life, but hey...that's why we love her. Strange as she may be at times, but few great artists are every really normal.

To my delight she mixed old favorites like “Mamma’s Gun” with new joints like "Amerykahn Promise", "Soldier" and my new favorite "Master Teacher", even though I had to text somebody for the lyrics that she kept reapeating - for anyone else who goes to her concert and get’s confused it’s “I stay woke” not broke, doke or folk…I really should have listened to the new album before the concert...my bad :)

She continued to make it a show, with antics like taking off her wig (girl I woulda to, it was hot in the audience, I'm sure it was burning up on the stage!!!) and she demonstrated the complexity of a dysfunctional relationship red ball as she performed "My Eyes are Green". I gotta say though...I was really feeling like she was me and a certain someone (maybe a few certain someones....) were that ball...I know I was not alone in my sentiments.

The entire night I was so proud of Boston, the show was basically sold out with one a few staggering seats here and there, and they stayed on their feet for the entire night despite the rise in the temperature due to the constant body movement.

Was it a perfect performance? Hardly, some songs could have been shorter, she did drop the microphone a few times and things were at times off beat, but overall this experience, though shared by many, was made intimate through her sounds, her words and her lyrics and even though you may not have understood it all you still felt the love, you still felt..."Hip hop…is bigger than religion…hip hop...this on is fa Dilla…"

So fab!

5.15 Fashion for Darfur | Vinalia | Felt Boston

Thursday, May 15 Vinalia Restaurant (34 Summer St, Downtown Crosing) and Felt (533 Washington Ave, Downtown Crossing) have joined forces to bring you Fashion for Darfur, a fundraising event for the efforts to end genocide in Darfur. Proceeds will go to Oxfam America, Genocide Intervention Network and The Massachusetts Coalition to Save Darfur.

The event will offer four levels of entertainment including: themed fashion levels, live entertainment, audiovisual displays, silent and live auctions, performances, guest speakers, sponsored cocktail reception, hors d’oeuvres and more.

Local fashion designers, handpicked by high-fashion model and entrepreneur Polina Raygorodskaya of Polina Fashion, will be chosen to represent the themes and concept designs of each floor at Felt for the night of the event. Such concepts include: Sporty, Eco-chick, Hollywood Glamour and Rock n’ Roll. The ideologies of each themed level will be paired with an energy drink, wine, spirits, beer and non-alcoholic beverage during the event.

Tickets range from $20 - $150 dollars and are tax deductable.

Recap: Pre-Cinco de Mayo | Z Square

On Saturday I hit up one of my favorite spots, Z-Square (14 JFK Street, Harvard Square, Cambridge) promoted by two of my favorites J. Francois and K. Pritty.

By 11:15 p.m. the place was already almost packed. There was a different vibe than the usual crowd of Harvard kids and young professionals. I was surprised to find so many people wearing jeans. Are we getting lax on the dress code? Even the ever dapper J. Francois was seen sporting a T…not that I minded (wink) but still…

Oddly though, there were a few people in ball gowns…yes I said ball gowns and tuxedos with cummerbunds, but I think they were just coming from an event. Even still…bring a change of clothes, it’s not that serious. Maybe they thought, “I paid money for this dress, I’m gonna wear it out!” In that case, do you boo. :)

This time the ratio was much more balanced (good lookin' out) and I saw a lot of new cats who probably just finished finals or something.

DJ Seye Daddy kept the party going although he did switch it up a lil’ bit too much...at least he did better than he has in the past. He was even cool enough to shout out The Fab Empire! Good lookin' out!! But the sound system was acting crazy again…I dunno if a speaker was blown or what but somebody needs to invest in some new equipment.

As far as the food, they did provide a buffet of nachos, which was nice that they stuck with the whole theme of pre-Cinco de Mayo and most people, including myself, had more than one plate.

The only real complaint of the night was the bar service…I don’t know if they had new staff or what have you, but it was SLOOOOWWWWW!!!  Bartenders must be able to make more than one drink at a time and can you at least remember what I ordered!! Why did the chick give me a vodka/cranberry when I ordered a vodka tonic…and why did my tonic have water in it and not tonic water? And why did I see one bartender “practicing” while I was waiting for my drink – he made a Gimlet like 4 times!! Uh dude…I’m waiting!!

Annnd...the bouncers need to get checked. One of my girls had considerable trouble at the door and was denied entrance for no reason. Grant it she did show up around 12:30, but she was willing to pay and the bouncers had let someone in right before her. That ish aggravates me!

By about 12:30 *side note, why does Boston wait so long to get hype? I mean you paid your money…why wait to have a good time!* anyways…by 12:30 it was truly the jump off. Even the promoters got into the action (wink, wink) and it got hot! I know the heat situation in Boston is always tricky, but turning the air-conditioning on would have made it a bit more of a pleasurable experience. Also for a while, it didn't really feel like a club, maybe adding some flashing lights or something will make patrons feel more partyesque rather than thinking, "should I really be dancing in a restaurant?"

Anyways… except for the incidents I mentioned above, I really had a good time. The biggest improvement was the ratio! Still gotta work on it, but I felt way more comfortable than the last J, K-Pritty joint. All in all I give the party B+/A-.

Recap: First Friday's Somerville

So, I gotta admit when I rolled up to the Club Night Games (30 Washington St, Somerville), I almost turned around. The “club” is in the back of the Holiday Inn hotel and you wouldn't recognize it had it not been for the maroon awning.

When I walked in the crowd ‘s average age was around thirty-five with most of the attention being paid to the Celtics game (Sorry guys!). The décor, wow…what can I say…a throw back to 1981 with neon liquor signs and track lighting on the ceiling. The DJ was practicing his spinning and every once and a while puffs of “fog” would permeate the dance floor, was this a high school dance or First Friday’s?

I looked for the free buffet that was advertised and saw only one large fruit platter and as decorative as it was…a fruit platter does not make a buffet …for future reference.

Once my friends arrived the next item on my list was to check out the $5 drink specials, but though the D.J. continuously repped them throughout the night, when I got to the bar they had no idea what I was talking about – (Didn’t you just hear the D.J?) – my Grey Goose and Tonic set me back $8. And it had some liquor in it. Not bad, but still…don’t say it if you don’t mean it.

My friends and I took a seat at one of the many tables and realized that nobody and I mean nobody was dancing. Like had even touched the dance floor. That was alright at 11, but by 12 I was getting worried. The DJ was so pumped off his own scratching skills he forgot we were even there for a while. Dude…aren’t you getting paid for this?

Okay so finally…the liquor sets in and I let myself be drawn into the beats as my girls and I were determined to have a good night. The DJ got better and was playing some serious old skool hits from the 90’s and mixed in some reggae. The dance floor got packed and the windin’ pairs glistened with sweat. Good thing most people didn’t stick to the upscale dress code…’cuz by last call I was wishin’ I had thrown on a t-shirt and some jeans for this mug. I also kinda wished I was from one of the islands the way the DJ kept givin’ shout outs to Trinidad – I mean can we get a shout out for the black people? For the African Americans dag…one love, man…one love.

But I can’t lie though, although this party definitely started out mad whack by the end it proved to be worth the wait. I still gotta give this party a C+/B ‘cuz I paid $15 for about an hour of a good time.
