Recap: Facing Love II | Hbernian Hall | 9 Alarms Entertainment

When I got to Hibernian Hall (182 Dudley St, Roxbury) I (arrived around 7:30). I thought that the flyer had advertised for a start of 6, but the elevator sign showed it starting at 7 p.m. They know how we are :) LOL.

Once at the door I rec'd a popular song compelation CD (not sure of the revelance), and was encouraged, but not pressed to contribute $10. I assume the donations were to offset the cost of the food and hall rental, but I wasn't sure.

The food was served shortly after and though I did not partake, it looked good! Plenty of chicken wings and fresh fruit, salads. People sho' nuff filled up their plates! It was completely wiped out by 8:15!


They kicked off the discussion with poetry by Warrior and moderator Sistah Lisa. Who both shared inspiring and thoughtful prose appreciating black love. The panelist were called to the stage by host Salih around 8:30. Panelist included, a psychologist, a Muslim religious teacher, a social worker and two surprise panelists - a husband and wife counseling team.

The audience was invited to participate in an interactive exercise when volunteers wrote on a flip chart their ideas of what men think women want and what women think men want. They shared the results with the group and the moderators referenced the findings throughout the evening.

The most poignant question discussed was "Should black women be proactive about finding a mate?" Some said yes, some said no...some said we are already pro-active. With no real consensus another topic ensued about if both black women and black men want spirituality what does that mean? This discussion produced the common theme of loving yourself first before you are able to love anyone else.

The funniest of comments of the evening was the "lonely revolutionary" Jahmal Crawford who is 37 (and an Aquarius) :) and wonders why the pimp, the crack head, and the homeless man all have a girlfriend and he doesn't. Talk about comedy!!

I also noted the no-so-hidden agenda of the surprise panelists who plugged their book every chance they got. People wore T-shirts in support of their businesses or upcoming events. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could come to an event and put the holistic agenda before our personal one?

We're not there yet, I guess.

I did leave the discussion around 9:15 and they had purposed to stay until 10:30 so I can't say what happened after I left. And I didn't make it to Facing Love I so I can't really compare the two. Having that said, I found the discussion to be entertaining and more of a platform to share individual belief systems rather than a coming together of thought to find solutions and bring healing - as the moderators previously described.

Clearly, the topic of black female and male relationships is not one that can be discussed over a 3 hour session and be resolved. Especially when the audience is female dominated by about 95% .

But, I suppose one cannot blame them for trying.

On Saturday night, The men of 9 Alarms Entertainment bring you comedy and dancing at the Sheraton Commander Hotel (16 Garden Street, Harvard Square, Cambridge). Featuring comedian Shaun Jones and DJ's Lifted (he's good!) and Ill Neil.

The Sheraton Commander is a very nice hotel so maybe they really are working on catering to the more upscale. We shall see...

I recommend purchasing tickets online for this event as 9 Alarms can be unorganized at times. Right now the link says one ticket costs $9,999...they need to fix that quick!

Recap: Almost Spring| 9 Alarms!

I headed out to the Hyatt for the 9 Alarms! Almost Spring event. I was so glad that I bought my ticket online for $21.47 because they were $30 at the door!

For all the money I spent to get in, I'm glad coat check was free.
I got inside early enough to see that they had a reggae room…nobody was in there but if you started feenin’ for that island flavor…that was the place to go.

The local band Soultron was pretty good; the lead singers had some pipes. Still, towards the end of their set the liquor must have kicked in because they started to sound like Sexual Chocolate from Coming to America. One of the singers said “my girl”, the other echoed “my girl…” but I guess the other guy didn't quite get what he was talking about so again he cooed “my girl” and this went on for a good 2 minutes…(“Sexual Chocolate ladies and gentlemen Sexual Chocolate!”)

Around 11:30 PM the DJ got to the tables and I am not sure if it was DJ Lifted or DJ T Clark, but he was JAMMIN’!!

Now let’s talk about the crowd. There was everything from girls in tube dresses to chicks in full length ball gowns. To some people I asked myself, “Is that child wearing a shirt!!??” I saw more tattoos on chicks than in a prison ward. We had pimp hats with feathers, to newsboys with matching vests. From the 40-somethings to the black professional to the “gurl I know you got in with your fake ID." Your baby daddy to your future husband….ya dig? Suffice to say it was a MIX, but the place was wall to wall packed!! I'm glad it was held in the hotel ballroom so there was plenty of room to move around.

Highlight of the night: in addition to the section where you could take your picture at the event (WHY??? Did I mistakenly come to a high school dance???) They served hors d’ oeuvres; eggs, hash browns and turkey bacon. I KID YOU NOT! Eh’ I did have me some eggs and hash browns and they were slammin’ – but was it fab? Ummm that would be a no. There were only three bars with one bartender each so you know lines for a drink were long.

Continuing with the un-fabness of this event, there was a brief altercation between a female and some guy, but security contained the fight pretty quickly and the party continued. *sigh.

Final Thoughts: This party opened my eyes to the fact that there are many different types of people in Boston… you just have to be uh- open. At a party like this you could act any kinda way…nobody was there to judge you, so if you wanna pull out that two tone weave boo…you do you.

My advice to 9 Alarms!, you obviously know how to cater to a more local crowd so keep doin’ your thing - just don’t try to put “Grown’ n’ Sexy” or “Classy Event” to any of your party titles, ‘cuz ain’t nothing grown or classy about your events – keep it real. My advice to my readers, if you are looking for something different and aren’t feelin’ boughie stop by a 9 Alarms! party. Otherwise save your money for the let out at IHOP, it’ll be about the same.

Saturday 3.15 | Ring the Alarm at the Hyatt Regency

The self proclaimed “hottest” firemen in Boston of 9! Alarms Entertainment – (Actually, I’ve seen pics of them, they are pretty cute) - are hosting a It's Almost Spring (boo! to the party title) on Saturday at the Hyatt Regencey Hotel (1 Avenue De Lafayette, Downtown). Featuring DJ’s T. Clark and Lifted, with performances by comedian Corey Manning and Soultron

Don’t worry if the party gets too hot, you are with trained professionals ; ). These guys only host events in Boston every now and again – they have some serious day job’s y’all - so go on and check them out. As for the crowd, expect a broad range - from young professionals to the grown n' sexy - just watch out for the playa with the pressed hair totin' a pimp cup - he might be more than you can handle!
