5.2 MFA First Friday's

Actionnaire Events and So Good Entertainment bring you a two part event. First, kick-off of the Spring/Summertime weekly event of the MFA's (465 Huntington Ave, Fenway) First Friday's with their Black and White Affair from 5:30 - 9 p.m.

The cost is the museum admission of $17

Recap: Fabulosity | Felt

Felt (533 Washington St, Downtown Crossing) is one of my favorite chill spots in Boston, but for some reason it never really draws a crowd. Unfortunately Friday night's Fabulosity party was no exception.

The promoter Liz of E1Live! Entertainment had rented out the entire 3rd floor complete with five pool tables and bar access, but I didn't see more than fifteen people there at one time the entire night.

Part of the problem was that although the lounge feel of the party was great, we could tell that the "real" party was happening upstairs and unless you could get a wrist band, you weren't able to access that floor. Although Liz tried to get us wrist bands, I guess management wasn't cooperating, 'cuz they never materialized.

To make matters worse the drinks were n-a-s-t-y...I have not had worse round of drinks in my life. My girl Melissa ordered a ginger ale - I mean come on - how can you mess up a ginger ale? I guess our bartender did 'cuz she sent it back once and still got a ginger ice with no ale. My roomie Claudia took it back in the day with an amaretto sour...which had no sour. And I bravely tried Cosmopolitain that was made with grenadine not cranberry juice - it friggin' tasted like cough syrup. So...my suggestion for you is if you happen to go to Felt on a slow night, stick to basic drinks like rum and coke or maybe a gin and tonic...maybe it was just the bartender, but still...

But you know a party is definitely not poppin' when the promoter leaves before you do...yeah. So all in all Fabulousity was sooo unfab! - but it was free and I got to play a round of pool - the atmosphere was nice so my night wasn't horrible, but y'all who didn't make it - please don't feel like you missed out, 'cuz you sho nuff didn't.

I got to keep it real y'all...

Recap: The Spring Preview | S.U.E.D.E | The Good Life

I rolled up to the Good Life (28 Kingston St, Downtown Crossing) a quarter to 12 and was immediately met with a line (I thought my reservation guaranteed no waiting in line?) but I guess that was unrealistic. Still, the wait was only about 5 minutes so I really can’t complain. I got my free drink ticket and headed downstairs.

This lounge (okay...I get it Boston + lounge = small) had a decent crowd and filled up quickly. I noticed a lot of people from Harvard, which would make sense since the promoters are in the Law School, so it was a very similar, almost identical, to the crowd at Z-Square.

*Side story*: Some guy gave me a business card to "keep-in-touch" and I really thought it was for business, but when I read it it said “Harvard African American Studies, Doctoral Candidate” Seriously?? Okay I know we're BYP and all…but if you are at a (pretty much) Harvard party…how you gonna bring a card about going to Harvard – pah-lease get over yourself.

Anyways… yeah so the crowd, especially the dudes, were really willin’ on the I-attend-Harvard -ish…I wasn't feeling that at all. But the party itself was cool. I did get my free drink, but by the time I got it they were only serving wine, which was kind of a bummer, but whatever, it was free.

The music was slammin’! They didn’t shout out the DJ or else I would give him mad props. He was REALLY good and people were really trying to dance. Now…the air conditioning…ummm...was non-existent. That was a serious issue that needed to be fixed pronto - people were not cute sweating out their perm and press. Not a good look.

The venue, as loungey as it was, was waaaaay too small. People were not only sweaty but falling on top and over one another, which had this not been a Harvard crowd, could have caused some serious issues. (i.e. some chick gets hit with a bottle).

Sooooo for S.U.E.D.E.'s premier event, I'd say they did a really good job. They got people to come out, the ratio was good and for the most part people had a good time. But if they want their crowd to be more than just another Harvard party, they’re gonna need to step up their game to ensure that the venue is appropriate and all of their patrons have a good time, not just their friends.

I give this party a B -

Recap: 3 Degrees of Separation | The Red Fez

This event came at me on the fly but I thought I would recap what you missed. :)

This networking event was sponsored by Marvin Jones Jr, and Harold Martin, the guys that brought you the Patriots parties at Kings in the fall.

The Red Fez (1222 Washington Street, South End) is T accessible on the Silver Line, and there is plenty of parking both in the back and on the street. By 7:30 p.m. the place was packed! The décor is hard to miss, with really great high ceilings, rich exposed brick arched walls and metal lanterns hanging from the ceiling. There is even an open patio, which will be great for summer time. Most people were hovered around the bar, but it got super crowded so we decided to grab a table towards the back to get some food.

We each got apps, that set us back only $9, though an entree will run you around $22. It’s a Mediterranean restaurant so the menu had an eclectic mix of hummus, tabbouleh salad and other things I couldn’t pronounce :) Still, when the food came we were very pleased. I had a zucchini pancake with yogurt sauce, Michelle had the scallops and Melissa had the shrimp, which they both recommend.

Our waitress was extremely gracious, apologizing for the wait and making sure we knew what was going on with our food all the while laughing at our “company’s” jokes. I got you Mr. Aaron!

Everyone was very friendly and on the network grind, going from table to table to pass out business cards. I was having such a good time that I when I looked at my watch I was suprised to see it was a quarter to 10 - and several people were still having drinks and socializing.

Recap: Girls Night Out | Vinalia

So me and my girlies headed out to Vinalia for the last night of Girls Night Out at Vinalia (33 Summer St, Downtown Crossing). The place was a little hard to find as it has two different addresses: 33 Summer St and 101 Arch St!

*Fab! Girl Tip enter on Summer Street; it is soooo much easier. And the promoters totally got the address wrong. If you want people to come to your stuff, get it right.

Anyways...after going up the escalator in this business type building, we ended up at the V. The place is actually really nice. If I worked in that building I would be sneaking down there all the time...with nice leather couches, big open space and a really inviting atmosphere.

The Girls Night Out section was on the other half of the bar; we just wandered over there, the organizers were busy ordering food and drink for themselves. Still, they offered a tasty treat with chocolate fountains with marshmallows along with strawberries and pound cake pieces on skewers. Yum!

We moved over to the bar area to take a seat on these very stylish but extremely uncomfortable bar stools to order some drinks...BUT there was no bartender. We waited for the waitress to place our order, which took forever, even though there weren’t a lot of people there. The drinks were okay... I ordered a dirty apple martini; it was refreshing but pretty much tasted like an apple martini without the marichino cherry.

The crowd was mostly over 40 so clearly this was not our scene.

After we finished our drink, we decided to move onto the next.

Fab! Recommendation: Vinalia is a decent place for a cocktail, but I would not go to another Girls Night Out there - it was kind of a waste.

4.26 Dons and Divas w/ Jamin' 94.5 | Z-Square

Saturday, Restless Entertainment & Respect and Power Records present The Dons & Divas Affair at Z-Square (14 JFK Street, Harvard Square, Cambridge).

This 21+ event will have music by JAMIN' 94.5's DJ Geespin.

Admission is reduced all night to $10 (that's something new) if you RSVP here!! or text 617-820-0923 by 6 p.m. on Saturday.

They will have complementary hors d' oeuvres and drink specials...which is nice...now if only they would reverse it: complementary drinks and food specials ...maybe one day Boston, maybe one day! :)

Looks like Z-Square might be the hot spot for Spring.

4.25 Party for Free | Fabulosity

I just don't know what to say about this flyer ; there's just so much going on...but yet so little information. *Sigh*...but I promised to keep y'all in the know so here it is.

E1 Live! Entertainment is having a Fabulosity party at Felt (533 Washington Street, Downtown Crossing) I am guessing this is a birthday party because it says "24 and loving it"...and maybe the girl in the middle is the birthday girl...or one of the many on the side...I'm very confused...maybe you can help?

At any rate, this event is supposedly free before 12 - and Felt is a nice venue so you may want go to check it out just for that. If the party is a bust you can always play a round of pool on the lower levels.

*Fab! Girl Tip wear your club but comfortable shoes and be prepared to go up a bunch of stairs, no lie...like four flights!!!!

Think you got what it takes to be a top model? The Fashion House is having an open model search at District Lounge (180 Lincoln Street, Financial District). You got to show up by 9:30 p.m. dressed for the part, complete with your hair fixed and your makeup done. No experience necessary!! The on-site photographer is Richard Bertone, hair by Charles Maksou and make-up by Tia Maria.

They don't mention it on the flyer, but I assume there will be a fashion show as well.

4.24 SKIN | Z Square

Thursday night, J. Francois and K. Pritty along with the brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. are saying goodbye to Skin Fashion line designer Sonjia Williams at Z Square (14 JFK Street, Harvard Square, Cambridge). There will be 3 DJ's (why so many?) spinnin': DJ Select, DJ Captain Kirk and DJ Frank White, so the music should be an ecelctic mix. Let's just hope they coordinate before hand so they don't end up playing the same songs over and over again.

But if the flyer is any indication of the evening to come - it should be hot! ;)

*Fab Girl Tip: Kappas tend to say, "Pretty boys bring out pretty girls" so I bet there will be a whole lotta girls - schemers come prepared to buy your own drink ;).

ReCap: The Good Life | Vintage Lounge

I rolled up to Broad Street around 10 and got a prime parking spot just outside of the Vintage Lounge (75 Broad St) When I walked up to the door I was greeted by the usually friendly staff, and immediately after I walked through the door someone came in to take my coat for free…nicccceeee.

My ears, though were a bit confused with techno blasting in one ear and smooth sounds of soul rifting through the other…guess which way I went?:) The small lounge area was wall to wall with beautiful people strewn on leather couches, listening to the sounds of Alonzo Harris and 6 fingers band - at least I think that was the name …there were only 3 of the band members there, but it was easy listening as I sipped on my Raspberry Cupcake Martini courtesy of the bartender Patrick.

After his set the party started to pick up and me and my girls moved into the other room where fortunately the music had changed up. As I started to feel the rhythm I starte to get this strange feeling that something just wasn’t right – perhaps it was the swish swish of weave on my bare back or when Usher’s “I wanna make love in this club” came on I was surrounded by metallic skirts and waving manicured hands with no dude in sight– yes, my friends the ratio was waaaay off kilter - like 12 to 1 – no lie- I felt like I was in a friggin’ R&B music video watin' for somebody to make it rain. To make matters worse the dance floor was so tight you could barely move, let alone dance, so I got to perfect my two-step (lol).

DJ Select did play a better set as opposed to the techno and latin laden FLAUNT, but he still played a couple songs more than once and at one point the music stopped all together for a solid minute…now that may not seem like much time, but when you got a 1:40 a.m. cut off, every second counts.

I can’t lie though, of the brotha’s that were in there – all 15 of them – they were lookin’ good, and the women dag man!!! – I gotta step my game up ‘cuz they were seriously showing out…J. Francois and Mr. K.Pritty def’ bring the sexy ladies so fella’s last night you coulda had your pick.

I must say, I am proud that they consistently keep their events classy with no drama (at least in public) :) and at the end of the night I felt ushered out rather than hurded which was also a good look.

All in all it was a good production – ‘cuz at this point they can no longer be classified as just parties – they definitely got people to come out but…the male to female ratio put made it a chick fest - couple that with a serious lack of space - puts this party at a B+.

Recap: Classic Friday’s at Z-Square

So after several weeks of numerous texts, e-mails and phone calls from So Good Entertainment asking us to PLEASE come back! Fab! CFO Erika and I headed out to Classic Fridays (Previously called Off the Wall Fridays) at Z Square (14 JFK St, Cambridge).  I have to admit I was a bit skeptical since we had gone to Classic Fridays several months ago at another location and it was... well – wack, but everyone deserves a second chance, right?

We showed up early enough that entrance to the party was free, although the flyer advertised that it was $10. The promoter, Edgar was also supposed to be passing out free shots, but with all the running around he was doing that never materialized. Did I mention that I hate false advertising?!

There was a pretty decent young crowd (the average age was around 22) though they might as well be called Harvard Friday’s as ninety percent of the patrons were Harvard affiliated. The vibe was very chill, almost too chill. I felt kind of awkward...almost like I was at a cocktail party and should of brought a date. Everyone seemed to know one another and if they didn’t they weren’t really open to meeting anyone new. Still, this was the first time in a long time that I showed up to any place in jeans, a cardigan with my glasses on and still had a decent time dancing and socializing. Big ups to the “Men with Jobs” who got our drinks for the night. One time for Cordell!!

DJ Eight-Two did his thing and played mostly reggae. The unfortunate thing is that he has the tendency to cut songs off right as they were getting good (boo!). To sum it up, there was a lot of standing around and drinking, and not very much dancing.

I would recommend this place as a Friday night alternative when you just want to come as you are and have a drink with friends – though you might need to bring your own.

One of my boys hit up the J. Francois and K. Pritty’s Saturday Night Special at Z-Square (14 JFK, Cambridge). Even though it was publicized at the very last minute there was a good turn out and it was a good alternative to the seemingly more popular Kappa Kruise.

Looks like Boston's Promo Kings were unstoppable this weekend.

Recap: FLAUNT Your Style at Umbria!

Too bad if you didn't make J. Francois, K. Pritty & Blu Mist Entertainment's "Flaunt Your Style" party at Umbria because you definitely missed out.

Since me and my friend Jax had pre-paid tickets, we got to skip the line and go right in…nice! Up this very long staircase was a very chill lounge area with leather couches and smooth sounds that beckoned you to the small dance floor. And my-oh-my did the people look good; everyone was wearing suits and party dresses. I was so proud of Boston!

They did have a coat check for only $1, which was great! But at the end of the night…you got what you paid for. It took me over a half an hour to get my coat and the line was pretty rowdy at the end of the night. Not a good look. Next time stash your coat somewhere…it is not worth it!


And OMG, why was the bartender soooooo sssslooooowwww?? For some reason, she could only make two drinks at a time – maybe she has short term memory issues. Still, drinks were reasonably priced at $9.

The dance floor was upstairs, where the music selection was quite strange. DJ Select was heavy on the Latin and techno?? Yup, I said techo. And he kept shouting out 'the sexy ladies'!…alright already! Yes we KNOW we’re sexy…please continue your regularly scheduled DJing. Either he didn't understand his audience or he had a few too many drinks in VIP.

And oh yea, what happened to the fashion show? If it happened I never saw it... I can’t stand false advertising!!!

Still kudos because I loved the ambiance of Umbria. The lounge area is really great for intimate conversations and sitting down when your feet started hurting from those stilletos. The bouncers – until the coat check incident – were very professional and cordial to the patrons. But the real highlight of the night was the crowd. Everyone really showed out and looked good doing it. People were friendly and made some real connections not just hook ups – tho’ I aint mad atcha if you did the latter!

All in all I give this party a A- because it really missed the mark on some critical elements.
